Planning Application Process
How Does Council Assess your Application
Every council is governed by the Sustainable Planning Act 2009, therefore you can be assured that everyone is treated equally and fairly.
Each council has differing planning schemes. Under the provisions of each planning scheme, applicants may need a planning approval for certain developments. The process for assessing and deciding developments is known as the Integrated Development Assessment System (IDAS)
5 Step Development Process
The (IDAS) process applicable to a particular development application varies depending on the nature of the application. The Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning offers an interactive tool to produce flow charts, to help understand the IDAS process.
Here is a general overview of the application assessment process, broken down into a five step procedure with associated links to the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.
This process consists of 5 stages:
1. Application stage
2. Information and referral stage
3. Notification stage
4. Decision stage
5. Compliance stage
Development applications MUST be made using the approved IDAS forms from the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning website and in some cases relevant council application forms.
